chili and the chocolate factory is, as the title suggests, a charlie and the chocolate factory fanfiction set decades after the original two books. it’s many things: an examination of the consequences of living in such a wacky world, a critique of roald dahl’s oeuvre & worldview, a vehicle for stupid jokes & inventive use of language.
i haven’t read any dahl since i was a larva, but there’s a lot of reference / intertextuality here. genuinely, i would pay money for an annotated chili that points out all the pulls from other works. if nothing else it’d be interesting to see what i missed.
chili and the chocolate factory a maddeningly good book. i got invested in its cast & events really quickly. it goes a lot of places. i highly recommend it, even if you have no particular attachment to or familiarity with dahl’s work.
